10 Things Nobody Tells You About Long Train Journeys in India

There is a special kind of calm that comes with a long train journey in India. The city falls away, the fields roll past, and for a day or two your only job is to sit, eat, sleep and watch the country go by.

But anyone who has spent 30 hours on a train from Delhi to Chennai or Guwahati to Mumbai knows it is not always that simple. The AC is freezing, your phone dies at the wrong time, and you realise too late that you should have planned your meals.

Most travel guides tell you to carry your ID and reach the station early. Here are the things they usually leave out, picked up from many long hauls across Indian Railways.

1. Your berth decides the kind of journey you'll have

Not all berths are equal on a long trip. The lower berth gives you a window and easy access, but it doubles as everyone's seat during the day. The middle berth folds down for daytime sitting, so you can't lie on it whenever you like. The upper berth is the most private and best for sleeping in the afternoon, but climbing up and down gets tiring.

Side berths are narrower and the side lower turns into two facing seats by day. If you're travelling with someone, book a lower and an upper in the same bay. You get daytime space and a quiet spot to nap.

2. There are unwritten (and written) rules about sleeping hours

Indian Railways allows passengers to sleep on reserved berths at night, generally from 10 PM to 6 AM. Outside those hours, the person on the middle berth can expect to sit on the lower berth, and the lower berth passenger is expected to make room.

In practice, it's a negotiation. A quick word with your co-passengers when you board ("what time do you usually sleep?") avoids awkward moments at 9 PM.

3. AC coaches get much colder than you expect

The AC on long-distance trains often runs cold, especially at night. Many first-timers spend the first night shivering.

In AC classes you usually get a bedroll with a blanket, two sheets and a pillow. Still, carry a light shawl or hoodie and socks. The air is also dry, so keep a water bottle and lip balm close.

4. The bedroll is clean, but you'll want your own comforts

Bedrolls are washed and sealed, but they're basic. A small inflatable neck pillow, an eye mask and earplugs make a big difference, especially when the coach lights stay on late or someone's phone plays videos at full volume.

In Sleeper class there is no bedroll at all, so carry a light sheet or travel blanket.

5. Food is the part most people plan worst

On a 24 to 40-hour journey, you'll need four to six meals. Many travellers assume the pantry will sort it out, but not every train has a pantry car, and the menu repeats fast.

Platform stalls are tempting, but halts on fast trains are short. Running out at a two-minute stop to buy samosas is how people miss trains.

A few things that work better:

  • Pack the first meal from home. Theplas, parathas, puri-aloo and dry snacks last well for the first 12 hours.
  • Order fresh meals in advance. You can now order food on train from restaurants at stations along your route through IRCTC-authorised e-catering services like Zoop. You enter your PNR, pick a station and meal, and it's delivered to your seat. It's especially handy for breakfast, lunch or dinner on day two, when home food has run out.
  • Carry dry snacks for the gaps. Fruit, nuts, biscuits and khakhra get you through delays and late arrivals.
  • Buy sealed water. Stick to Rail Neer or sealed bottles from authorised vendors.

6. Delays are normal, so build a buffer

Long-distance trains often run a few hours late, especially in winter fog across North India or during the monsoon. A train scheduled to arrive at 6 PM may roll in at midnight.

Don't book a connecting flight, bus or important meeting too close to your scheduled arrival. Keep a few extra snacks and a bit of phone battery in reserve for the delay you didn't plan for.

7. Charging points are limited, and shared

Most coaches have charging points, but there are usually only a few per bay, and six to eight people want to use them. Some don't work at all.

Carry a fully charged power bank (10,000 mAh or more) and a short cable. Charge your phone whenever a point is free, not when the battery hits 10%.

8. You will lose network, for hours

Long routes pass through forests, hills and rural stretches with weak or no mobile signal. On some routes, that means several hours offline.

Download movies, playlists, podcasts and offline maps before you board. Save your ticket and PNR details offline too, in case the TTE checks while you have no signal.

9. Washrooms are cleanest early in the morning

Washrooms are usually cleaned at major stations, and they're at their best early in the morning before the coach wakes up. By late evening, they can get messy.

Keep a small kit handy: tissues, wet wipes, hand sanitiser, a toothbrush and slippers. Western and Indian-style toilets are both usually available at the end of each coach.

10. Your co-passengers can make or break the trip

On a long journey, the people in your bay become your temporary neighbours. Families will often offer you food, someone will ask you to watch their bags, and conversations can go on for hours.

Be friendly, but sensible. Politely decline food from strangers, keep valuables on you, and lock your luggage to the chain under the seat. A little courtesy, such as keeping your volume down and sharing the charging point, goes a long way.

You can eat from the pantry car where available, carry home food, or order meals in advance through IRCTC-authorised e-catering services that deliver to your seat at stations on your route.

Final thoughts

A long train journey in India is one of the best ways to see the country, if you're prepared for it. Pick the right berth, dress for the cold AC, keep your phone charged, and sort out your meals before you board. Do that, and those 30 hours become the part of the trip you'll remember most.
