A Premix Has to Survive the Journey from Feed Mill to Animal
A feed formulation records the nutrients a manufacturer intends to deliver. Between that calculation and consumption, the feed passes through mixing, processing, storage and handling. A useful premix discussion follows that journey.
This is especially important when the same purchasing team manages poultry and aquaculture requirements. Both programmes may include vitamins, but the animals, feed processes and conditions of use differ. Treating them as variations of one generic purchase can leave important questions unanswered.
Start with the diet the animal receives
A vitamin premix for poultry feed should be evaluated within the complete diet. The nutritionist needs to account for the intended bird category and production stage, together with the contribution of the other ingredients.
The purchasing brief should reflect that formulation. It should state the premix composition, intended inclusion and the units in which nutrient contributions are expressed. This creates a direct link between the diet calculation and the product being ordered.
For aquaculture, identify the species and feeding system with equal care. An aqua feed premix supplier needs a defined application before recommending a suitable option.
Ask what processing changes
Feed processing conditions belong in the technical conversation. FAO guidance on fish nutrition identifies processing and storage as potential causes of vitamin losses. The effect depends on the nutrient and the conditions involved; one blanket assumption cannot represent every formulation.
Give the supplier a useful description of the manufacturing process. Ask which data are relevant to the proposed premix and which questions still require evaluation in the customer's own line.
Any adjustment to the formulation should follow a nutritionist's assessment. Adding an arbitrary excess does not replace understanding the ingredient, the process and the expected retention.
Account for the storage period
The elapsed time between premix manufacture and feed consumption matters to the evaluation. There may be storage at the supplier, at the feed mill and on the farm.
Review the stated shelf life and storage instructions against this actual sequence. A delivery that arrives close to its expiry may not fit a slow-moving production schedule, even when the material passes receiving checks.
Discuss minimum remaining shelf life at receipt and suitable order quantities. These are purchasing decisions with practical consequences for how the formulation is managed.
For aqua feed, include the water
Aquaculture introduces another stage before consumption: feed enters water. FAO guidance identifies leaching as a possible route of vitamin loss. This makes the intended feed and feeding conditions relevant when evaluating a premix.
The buyer should ask how the proposed ingredient forms fit that application and what supporting information is available. Avoid treating evidence from a poultry programme as proof of performance in an aquaculture system.
The right question is whether the complete feed can deliver the intended nutrition under its actual conditions of use.
Make supplier support specific
Jubilant Ingrevia supplies animal nutrition ingredients and premix solutions across poultry, aqua and other animal categories. This provides a starting point for discussing a species-specific brief rather than selecting solely from a broad product label.
A productive technical exchange would cover composition, inclusion, processing conditions, storage and the evidence needed for qualification. Procurement can then agree the commercial supply details around an approved nutritional requirement.
Keep the feedback connected to the batch
Once routine supply begins, retain the information needed to connect a premix delivery with the feed batches in which it was used. If performance or analytical questions arise, that traceability gives the investigation a clear starting point.
Interpret farm outcomes with the wider system in view. Feed intake, management, environment and health can all require investigation; a single outcome should not automatically be attributed to one ingredient.
Premix sourcing works best when nutrition, production and procurement share the same record of what was selected and why. That allows the team to review a change against evidence, from the original formulation to the feed the animal actually receives
