Boiler Upgrade Scheme: See How Heat Pumps Can Cut Your Bills

With energy bills under pressure, changing an old boiler can feel like a gamble. A heat pump may reduce heating costs, but outcomes depend on the home, system and tariff. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) lowers upfront costs for eligible installations in England and Wales. Understand how efficiency and grant support work before deciding.

How can a heat pump reduce energy costs?

A boiler creates heat by burning fuel. A heat pump instead moves heat from outdoor air or the ground into your home, using electricity to run its compressor and controls. Because it transfers heat rather than generating all of it directly, it can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity consumed. Energy Saving Trust says typical heat pumps can provide around three to four units of heat per unit of electricity, though real-world performance changes with conditions.
That efficiency can reduce energy use, but it does not automatically mean every household pays less. Electricity usually costs more per unit than gas, so a heat pump’s seasonal performance and your tariff matter. Replacing an old, inefficient oil, LPG or electric system may create a different bill outcome from replacing a newer gas boiler. The best estimate is specific to your home, not a generic promise of savings.

What determines your heat pump bills?

Several details affect the running cost:
•Seasonal performance: Request your home’s estimated seasonal performance factor (SPF), not just a peak rating.
•Heat demand: Insulation, draughts, room size and hot-water use determine required heat.
•Emitters: Suitable radiators or underfloor heating can work with cooler water.
•Tariff: Compare unit prices; a time-of-use plan may help if you can shift demand.
•Controls: Heat pumps usually perform best with steady, longer operation.
During the survey, ask the installer about heat-loss calculations, radiator changes, controls and projected annual electricity use. Request bill-savings assumptions in your written quote, including the tariff and comparison boiler, plus factors that could change the estimate.

Make the home ready for efficient heating

You do not need a perfect home to consider a heat pump, but reducing avoidable heat loss can support comfort and performance. Check loft and wall insulation, draughts around doors and windows, and whether radiators are suitable for lower-temperature heating. The installer can identify improvements that matter most; ask for optional work to be itemised so you can compare the costs.
Once installed, avoid treating the heat pump exactly like a traditional boiler. A steady indoor temperature and a modest setback while away or asleep often work better than switching the system completely off and asking it to recover quickly. Lower flow temperatures can improve efficiency, but changes should be made gradually and with installer guidance so rooms stay comfortable. Review your instructions before adjusting unfamiliar settings.
If you have solar panels, a home battery or a time-of-use tariff, ask how these could coordinate with heating and hot-water schedules. The best setup depends on your household routine; shifting consumption is useful only if the savings outweigh any extra costs or inconvenience.

What support does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme offer?

The BUS grant is deducted from the installation quote by your installer. Current support includes:
•£7,500 towards an air-to-water heat pump.
•£7,500 towards a ground-source heat pump.
•£2,500 towards an air-to-air heat pump.
•£5,000 towards an eligible biomass boiler.
Eligible homes heated by oil or LPG without a mains-gas connection can receive a temporary additional £1,500 towards an air-to-water or ground-source heat pump until 31 March 2027. That can make the relevant grant up to £9,000. The scheme is for eligible property owners in England and Wales; one grant is available per property. Hybrid systems and replacing an existing low-carbon heating system are not covered.
To Get Heat Pump Grant Through Boiler Upgrade Scheme, contact an MCS-certified installer, request written quotes and ask them to confirm your eligibility. The installer applies to Ofgem on your behalf. You must confirm consent and eligibility when Ofgem contacts you. The grant is not cash paid to you; check that the discount appears clearly in the quote and final invoice.

Compare the whole cost, not only the grant

A Boiler Upgrade Scheme Grant can reduce the initial price, but it does not tell you how much your future bills will be. Compare the net installation cost, likely electricity use, maintenance, warranty, tariff options and any radiator or insulation work. Ask for more than one quote and compare the same scope of work.
For a fair decision, ask installers to estimate annual energy consumption and explain how they reached the figure. Consider your current fuel costs, comfort needs and how long you plan to stay in the property. If an estimate claims a large saving, request the assumptions in writing and seek a second opinion if the design or calculations are unclear.

Frequently asked questions

1. Will a heat pump definitely lower my bills?

No. Savings depend on the system it replaces, your home’s heat demand, seasonal efficiency and energy tariff. Ask for a property-specific estimate rather than relying on a general claim.

2. How much electricity does a heat pump use?

It varies by home and system. A well-designed heat pump can deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity, but the installer’s seasonal estimate is the better guide to annual use.

3. Can I get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant for a new heat pump?

Potentially, if you own an eligible property, replace fossil-fuel heating and meet the scheme’s technology and property rules. Your MCS-certified installer can check your circumstances.

4. Does the grant arrive in my bank account?

No. The installer applies for it and deducts the approved amount from your quote. You pay the remaining installation cost under your agreement.

5. What is one simple way to improve efficiency?

Use steady heating and ask your installer to optimise the controls and flow temperature. Keep the home comfortable and seek professional advice before changing unfamiliar settings.
